Rwanda Celebrates 21st Kwita Izina Gorilla Naming Ceremony

Kigali, Rwanda | September 4, 2026: Rwanda celebrated the 21st edition of the Kwita Izina Gorilla Naming Ceremony on September 4, 2026, at the foothills of Volcanoes National Park, marking another significant milestone in the country’s ongoing efforts to conserve the endangered mountain gorilla population.

The annual ceremony saw 22 baby mountain gorillas officially given names, bringing together local communities, conservationists, researchers, tourism partners, government representatives, and distinguished guests from Rwanda and around the world.

The ceremony was graced by Rt. Hon. Justin Nsengiyumva, Prime Minister of Rwanda, as Guest of Honour, alongside H.E. Mokgweetsi Masisi, Former President of Botswana; H.E. Hailemariam Dessalegn, Former Prime Minister of Ethiopia; and Rt. Hon. Peter Pinda Mazengo, Former Prime Minister of Tanzania.

Held under the theme “Conservation is Life: Sustaining the Future,” this year’s Kwita Izina brought together prominent Namers from the fields of conservation, tourism, business, sport, entertainment, philanthropy, and public service. Their participation highlighted the importance of collective responsibility in protecting Rwanda’s unique natural heritage.

Rwanda’s Conservation Success

Addressing the gathering, Rt. Hon. Prime Minister Dr. Justin Nsengiyumva reaffirmed Rwanda’s commitment to conservation, community development, and international cooperation.

He highlighted the remarkable recovery of the mountain gorilla population, noting that in the early 1980s, only around 250 mountain gorillas remained in the Virunga Massif. Today, the global population has surpassed 1,000, with more than 600 mountain gorillas living in the Virunga Massif.

The Prime Minister attributed this progress to the dedication of rangers, veterinarians and researchers, strong conservation policies, responsible tourism, community participation, and international cooperation.

He stressed that conservation and community development must go hand in hand, emphasizing that protecting nature cannot be separated from improving the lives of people who live alongside protected areas.

Continued Commitment to Gorilla Conservation

Speaking at the ceremony, Jean-Guy Afrika, Chief Executive Officer of the Rwanda Development Board, underlined the importance of sustained cooperation in maintaining Rwanda’s conservation achievements.

He said the mountain gorilla represents what can be achieved through long-term commitment, strong institutions, community partnerships, and international cooperation, while also serving as a reminder that conservation efforts must continue.

Celebrating a Unique Rwandan Tradition

Kwita Izina, which means “to give a name” in Kinyarwanda, is Rwanda’s annual Gorilla Naming Ceremony. The tradition is inspired by the centuries-old Rwandan custom of naming children shortly after birth.

Since becoming an official annual event in 2005, Kwita Izina has developed into a globally recognised conservation platform. The ceremony celebrates Rwanda’s conservation achievements while recognising the vital contributions of communities, conservationists, partners, and organisations working to protect mountain gorillas and their natural habitat.

With 22 gorillas named in 2026, the total number of mountain gorillas named through Kwita Izina since its annual launch in 2005 has reached 460.

The 21st Kwita Izina once again showcased Rwanda’s determination to combine wildlife conservation, sustainable tourism, community empowerment, and international partnership, reinforcing the country’s position as a leading voice in global mountain gorilla conservation.

Veteran journalist N. Ram has spent decades covering politics, corruption, public institutions, foreign policy and abuse of power. His investigative legacy is particularly associated with evidence-based political journalism.

The Bofors Investigation

Ram played a leading role in The Hindu's investigation into the Bofors arms-deal controversy, working alongside Chitra Subramaniam and other journalists. The investigation became one of the most consequential political stories in modern Indian journalism.

Document-Based Investigation

These journalists have helped demonstrate the importance of independent reporting, documentary evidence, field investigation, cross-border collaboration and persistence in holding powerful institutions accountable.

Newspaper Association of India Demands Immediate Action Against Assault on Journalists and Security Personnel at Jantar Mantar

New Delhi: The Newspaper Association of India (NAI) has written to Hon'ble Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah, urging the Ministry of Home Affairs to order an immediate investigation and ensure strict legal action against those allegedly involved in the assault, intimidation, and misconduct towards journalists, media professionals, security personnel, and Rapid Action Force (RAF) jawans during the recent protest at Jantar Mantar.

In a letter addressed to the Home Minister, Dr. Vipin Gaur, General Secretary of the Newspaper Association of India, expressed serious concern over reports and videos circulating on social media that allegedly show journalists being physically assaulted, obstructed, and intimidated while carrying out their professional duties. The Association also highlighted reports that some female journalists were allegedly subjected to inappropriate and objectionable behaviour, calling for a thorough and impartial investigation into the incidents.

The NAI has requested the Ministry of Home Affairs to direct the concerned authorities to conduct a fair, impartial, and time-bound investigation, examine all available video footage and other evidence, including publicly available social media videos, identify those responsible, register FIRs wherever cognizable offences are established, and take strict legal action in accordance with the law.

The Association has further expressed concern over reports that security personnel, including RAF jawans and other law enforcement officials, were allegedly assaulted or obstructed while performing their duty of maintaining law and order. It has urged the government to investigate these allegations and initiate appropriate legal proceedings against those found responsible.

Emphasizing the vital role of a free press in a democratic society, the Newspaper Association of India stated that journalists—often referred to as the "Soldiers of the Pen"—play an essential role in informing the public, frequently working in challenging and sensitive situations. The Association noted that attacks on journalists while they are performing their professional responsibilities not only endanger media personnel but also undermine press freedom and democratic values.

The NAI also stressed that security personnel and RAF jawans dedicate themselves to safeguarding public order and national security and that any attack on them while discharging their lawful duties is equally unacceptable.

Strongly condemning all forms of violence, intimidation, and obstruction against journalists, media professionals, and security personnel, the Association appealed to the Union Home Minister to ensure that justice is delivered and effective measures are taken to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.

The Newspaper Association of India expressed confidence that under the leadership of Shri Amit Shah, the Government of India will take appropriate steps to uphold the rule of law, protect the freedom and safety of journalists, and ensure the security of law enforcement personnel serving the nation.

The day 1 evening closed with ‘Hanbok’ fashion show directed by Samuel Chung,  vice president of the Korean Culture Promotion Association, who is a veteran and has various experience in the world's fashion capitals like Paris (just coming from the latest fashion show in Paris). He personally designed and directed the fashion show in India along with his own designers and directing team from Korea. It was excited to see how the Korean traditional clothing, Hanbok was reinterpreted to show India its potential to lead the global fashion trend.

Do you know what is Dano Festival ?

New Delhi : The World has been gripped by various K-trends recently. But are you familiar with a Korean festival day which has K- food, k-beauty, and K entertainment all three in one?

You might have heard about Korean festivals Seollal (Lunar New Year) and Chuseok (Mid-Autumn harvest Festival), but have you heard of Dano? Dano, also known as Surit-nal (day) is a Korean traditional holiday that falls on the 5th day of the fifth month of the lunar Korean calendar, this year 3rd June will be “Dano” festival day. The character 'Dan (단)' in Dano means the first, and the character 'Oh' means 'five'. It had been regarded as a representative holiday along with Seollal and Chuseok before in Korea. it is the day with the most yang energy in the year, and various events are held nationwide.

Meaning

The meaning of Dano is the season of the beginning of the summer, and it represents a wind festival to end rice planting and pray for a good harvest.

K-Fashion and Beauty

According to Prophecy Market Insights, a specialized market research and analytics company’s 2020 article, the global K-beauty products market accounted for US$ 10.3 billion in 2019 and is estimated to be US$ 31.6 billion and to be registered a compounded annual growth rate 12.0% by 2029*.K-beauty products emphasize significantly on wellness and health, which could be attributed to it’s past traditions. One such example is dano festival which on this day women wash their hair in water boiled with sweet flag plant which is a common plant believed to make one's hair shiny. Women also put Angelica polymorpha flowers in their hair out of the belief that its aroma would repel evil. People wore blue and red clothes and dyed hairpins red with the iris roots. Men wore iris roots around their waist to ward off evil spirits.

 K-Food

Traditional foods consumed on this special day included various kinds of rice cakes, that have a wheel pattern on them as Surit-nal the former name of Dano, the word surit harks back to suri, meaning "wheel" and “nal” means day. Herbs wet with dew on Dano morning were also collected and consumed, as they were said to heal stomach aches and wounds.

K-entertainment

For entertainment many traditional games were played on Dano like -

1. Ssireum which a folk wrestling style and traditional national sport of Korea that began in the fourth century. Ssireum is also inscribed in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists. It is also enlisted as the 131st Intangible Cultural Property.

2. Seokjeon, The stone battle game, where as a form of martial training two teams throw stones at one another. The first known record of the stone battle game in korea  describes it being played by people of the Goguryeo dynasty in the sixth century C.E of Korean Peninsula.

3. Taekkyon –  Taekkyon is the first martial art enlisted as the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. It is also the 76th Intangible Cultural Property of South Korea. It is Taekkyon it is said has also influenced the name and conceptualization of Taekwondo.

4.Swing games

Traditionally the swing game was played by women, while Ssireum was a wrestling match among men at Dano festival. In addition, mask dance used to be popular among peasants due to its penchant for satirical lyrics flouting local aristocrats.

Though, the celebration of Dano has become weak in Korea these days, remembering and appreciation of the traditions has important meaning and stance. Tradition comprises our root or origin of identity. I have observed many similarities between the two countries, India and Korea more in its traditions, we can say we are connected and have shared similar root like family.
